Michael Crichton (1942-2008)

One of the writers who I most admire and whose subjects have probably most influenced my own writing, Michael Crichton, died of cancer at age 66. I gotta say, outta left field this one. I guess I never really paid close attention to his age – mostly just looked forward to his books, which, even if they weren’t always as good as his older stuff, were still unique enough and well written enough to be easy to blaze through because they’re so fascinating.  He was unmatched in combining real scientific ideas with fast-paced narrative, and many people have tried to match him, and no one ever will.
